Are you aware of the legal requirements for travelling with a dog or pet?
Know the rules - Rule 57 in the Highway Code states that pets should be “suitably restrained” when travelling in the car to make sure they do not distract the driver or injure themselves in the event of the driver having to stop quickly. Not complying could be evidence of careless driving which can incur a fine of up to £5000.
Consider a pet restraint - This is either a harness which has an adapter plugged into a seat belt clip, a carrier or a dog cage. This will help to keep your pet safe while travelling.
Pack the essentials - Make sure you have food, water, waste bags, leads, toys and medicine. It’s also handy to have any documents such as insurance details.
Keep them comfortable - Padded waterproof blankets that go over the backseats with an anti-slip underside are a good idea. They also help keep car seats clean. Boot liners are a great way to stop excess hair from embedding in the carpet.
Don't leave your pet in the car - There is no safe period of time for dogs to be left unattended in cars, even on cooler days. Did you know that when a dog's temperature goes above 40°C, it can trigger the start of irreversible damage to the brain and internal organs. To be safe, don't do it!
